Consultative seminar conducted

Hundreds of men and women belonging to different background and community deliberated on whether there is gender equality in the Manipur society in a consultative seminar held today at Kuki Inn, Imphal .
The one day consultative seminar was organized under the aegis of Women Affairs Department, Kuki Inpi Manipur on the theme, “Is there gender equality in our society?” .
The seminar successfully inaugurated by Rev S Prim Vaiphei and moderated by Chairperson of Women Affairs Department, Kuki Inpi Manipur Dr Tara Manchin Hangzo .
During the seminar, Dr Vijaylakshmi Brar presented a paper on “Domestic Violence prevalent in our Society – Are we doing something about it?, Nandini Thockchom led the discussion on the topic “Decision Making Process/Mechanism in Society” .
Dr Immanuel Z Varte spoke on “Tribal Customary Laws – Is it favourable to women? while Rev Benjamin Shakum presented a paper on “Church Domain – Role of men and women in the Church” .
Apart from the resource persons, speeches on gender equality and suggestions were provided by Sarah Begum (All Manipur Muslim Women), Rose Mangshi (KWU), Ngaineikim (KWHR) and J L Sawmi (HWA) .
The resource persons and experts also enlightened and sensitised the participants on the topic of gender awareness .
They emphasized that gender bias starts from home and educational institutions and underlined the need to shatter orthodox beliefs and biased values to achieve gender equality in the society.
