Imphal, June 16 2020:
Miffed with Leishemba Sanajaoba's nomination to contest Rajya Sabha election, a number of women bodies have reiterated that the titular king should abdicate his throne before he faces the election.
A joint statement of several women bodies including Kanglei Ima Lup (KIL), Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL), Iramdam Kanba Apunba Lup (IKAL), Poirei Lerimarol, Kanglamei, Nupi Samaj, Woman Association for Socio Economic Development (WASED) and Tammi-Chingmi said that the decision of the titular king to contest the election is "unfortunate and unprecedented" that will leave a black mark in the history of Manipur.
Appealing the titular king to "think over" and study the impact his decision would have on the society, the women bodies maintained it is unfortunate that the king is "stooping" low for an "ordinary" position as an MP (Member of Parliament) .
"We have no objection to Leishemba Sanajaoba contesting the elections as an individual in his own capacity.
We are only concerned with him contesting the election as king," they said reiterating that Leishemba Sanajaoba should abdicate his throne before the election.
It may be noted that Leishemba Sanajaoba is facing election on BJP ticket for the
lone Rajya Sabha seat on June 19 .
