1st seed of Moreh market complex sown

As part of the Government's initiative to boost trans-border trade between India and Myanmar, the foundation stone for a multi-storey market complex was laid today at Moreh jeep parking area by Commerce and Industries Minister Y Erabot.
The market complex to be constructed under the Assistance of State for Infrastructure Development for Export Programme of the Ministry of Commerce and Industries would be funded 90 per cent by the Centre and 10 per cent by the State Government.
Land required for the multi storey market complex would be provided by the Meitei Council Moreh (MCM) on lease for a period of 90 years.
With MANIDCO already selected as the work agency, the market complex is targeted for completion by March next year.
The ground floor of the market complex would be used as parking space while the second and third floors would be used as shops.
The market complex would also be fitted with lift facility.
With a view to construct the market complex speedily, a joint meeting of the leaders of MCM, Hill Tribal Council, Tamil Sangam and leaders of different communities was held today with the Industries Minister Erabot in the chair.
Addressing the meeting, Erabot appealed to the public not to pose any hindrance to development works taken up for growth of border trade but cooperate with the Government.
Informing that the State Government has been lobbying with the Government of India to open an export-import bank at Moreh, the Minister conveyed his gratitude to the MCM for providing land for the market complex.
The community leaders, on their part, assured full cooperation to all Government initiatives aimed at boosting the trans-border trade.
Earlier, speaking at the foundation stone laying function, Minister Erabot said that the Government decided to construct the market complex at Moreh after taking due note of the growing trans-border trade between India and Myanmar after the number of items sanctioned for trade between the two countries was increased to 48 .
He stated that he would station himself at Moreh as and when required so as to ensure that the market complex is constructed within a specific period.
The market complex would also have a gallery for displaying exports items of India which can draw attention of foreign tourists.
Informing that an awareness programme on border trade would be held at the border town on April 18, Erabot said that difficulties being faced by local people in export-import activities would be discussed during the programme.
Experts from India and Myanmar would also attend the awareness programme.
The foundation stone laying function was also attended by MANIDCO Chairman N Mangi and Commerce and Industries Commissioner O Nabakishore.
