JNMDA celebrates 57th birthday

The 57th foundation day of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA), Imphal was celebrated at its auditorium today along with felicitating meritorious students with gold medals.
Presentation of certificates to passing out students, solo dance performance by Gold medal winning students and cultural programmes were other highlights of the celebration attended by Pro Vice Chancellor of Manipur University H Nandakumar as chief guest and Vice Chairman of JNMDA Prof N Tombi Singh as president.
Meritorious students who have been honoured with gold medals are Y Bikram Singh (a third year student in post-diploma course and winner of Rajpal Gold Medal in Natya Chalom), N Kalpana Devi (a third year student in post diploma course in Raas and winner of Lourembam Tombi Gold Medal), Ng Meneka Devi ( a third year diploma course student in Dance and winner of Savita Mehta Gold Medal ), H Jina Devi (a student of third year diploma course in dance and winner of Khukhu Sarkar Gold Medal and T Dharmen Singh (a third year diploma course student in Sanskirtan and winner of Guru Gulapi Gold Medal) .
Established in 1958, JNMDA now offers various courses like 3-year foundation course, 3-year diploma course, 3-year post diploma course, etc in different disciplines including Raas, Lai Haraoba, Nat Sanskirtan Tribal Dance,Thang-Ta, etc.
Speaking at the occasion, Prof N Tombi advised the students not to take up study in the Academy only in name sake.
On its part, the Academy should also extend every possible assistance so that the students could explore and expose their latent talent and become true artists in life.
He further said that though there are enough teachers of dance, Thang-ta, Eshei, Cholom, Pung, etc, the number of books written in English on these subjects is extremely limited.
