In what could be a major blow to the rising number of NGOs in Manipur, a fake member of one such non-Governmental organisation is allegedly on the run for the last six-seven months after having duped certain NGOs in Manipur for about Rs 45, 000 in the name of Yoga and Nature Cure of Pune in Maharashtra.
The accused person, identified as Sagolsem Chaoba alias Dr Chaoba (34) s/o (L) S Angangjao of Uchiwa Leirak, Achouba Hayang in Imphal, is said to have duped many NGOs in the State coaxing them into believing that Yoga and Nature Cure, Pune would pay them an annual grant of Rs 10,000.In the process, the culprit is said to have collected a sum of about Rs 45, 000 over the last few years and vanished.
Addressing a press meet for the same, Yumnam Rajen Kumar, secretary of People Library, Yumnam Huidrom, revealed that the accused had also deceitfully withdrawn an amount of Rs 3000 by using the passbooks of the two NGOs, Youth Welfare Association of Chirai and People Library, Yumnam Huidrom in the month of January last.
Calling upon the culprit to come forward and return the money, Rajen asserted an FIR would be filed against the culprit if he was still absconding.
Rajen also informed that the absconding culprit, Chaoba, had collected an amount of Rs 45, 000 since 2006 and has been missing for the last six to seven months.
Detailing of the money collected, Rajen informed Rs 10,000 was collected from Rural and Education Development Organisation, Irongchesaiba, Rs 12.500 from Lamjing Meira-Thoukhong Laxmi Bazar, Rs 9000 from People Library Yumnam Huidrom, Rs 3000 from Youth Welfare Organisation, Chirai and Rs 5,000 from FASTO Association, Sekmaigin.
Even the family members of the accused have permitted us to take action against Chaoba, concluded the secretary of the People Library.
