The verification process of over 5000 cheques issued between October last year till March 31 this year is on in full swing at the PWD office following the decision of the State Government to allow the encashment of these cheques.
The cheques are to be encashed by November 30 this year and the total amount to be encashed stands at Rs 37 crores.
A 291 paged list has been issued to the General Manager of the SBI, MG Avenue Branch, Principal Secretary, Works and the Chief Engineer of the PWD to help in the verification drive of the cheques.
The PWD Chief Engineer has also deputed two officials to help in the verification drive, said sources adding that they are an Assistant Surveyor of Works and an LDC.
The two officials are being assisted by Cashiers of the 32 divisions of PWD.
The verification drive is being held at the office of the Manipur Hills and Plain Contractors' Association.
From Friday till date about 1000 cheques have been verified, said sources adding that it will take another 7/8 days for the verification drive to finish.
Meanwhile the Manipur Hills and Plain Contractors' Assn has expressed its gratitude to the Government for issuing the permission to encash their cheques which have been held up for quite a long time.
The encashment permission was given for cheques issued to the contractors of PWD, IFCD and PHED.
