National Mathematics Day held

The National Mathematics Day observance organised by Manipur Science and Technology (Mastec) commenced from today at Manipur Science Aquarium hall, DM College campus.
The observance is held every year throughout the country for the past many decades in recognition of Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan, who was born in Erode, Tamil Nadu on December 22, 1887 .
Even though the actual observance falls on December 22 to celebrate Ramanujan's birthday, this year Mastec is informed to be observing the event from February 23 to 27 due to 'unavoidable circumstances'.
As chief guest of the opening programme, DM College of Commerce principal Ng Brajakumar Singh called upon the upcoming generation to strive for excellence in education and not get satisfied with merely completing academic formality.
Pointing out that in the global context science has achieved significant advancement with scientists throughout the world relentlessly exploring beyond the earth, he lamented that education sector in Manipur is still at the nascent stage.

Strongly emphasising on mandatory computer education to all the students along with focusing on mathematics subject, Brajakumar pointed out that with Manipur set to become an important component of India's Look East Policy education of the masses is even more inevitable.
in his address, Mastec director Th surendranath stating that advancement in science and technology is a must in attaining goal of all-round development expressed that observance of National Mathematics Day would encourage the students to aim for further excellence in the subject.
Other speakers also highlighted that in honour of Ramanujan's contribution to mathematics, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh declared at a Madras University event for observing 2012 as the National Mathematics Year.
It was also conveyed that Ramanujan had no formal training in mathematics but being a gifted person, his inquisitiveness and dedication in solving mathematical problems led to his extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series and continued fractions.
The speakers further stated that Ramanujan developed his own mathematical research in isolation.
It is also informed that during the five-day observance, mathematics model exhibition cum competition, mathematics competition for class VI to VIII, mathematics quiz competition for students of class IX-X and Cl XI-XII standards, science film shows, mathematics puzzle, hands on activities (Origami), etc would be organised by Mastec.
