Adulterated sugar, packaged drinking water thrive in market

Adulterated sugar and impure packaged drinking water, which could be harmful to human body, were found being sold in different parts of the State.
The samples of the adulterated sugar and packaged drinking water were shown to media persons by T Brojendro Khaba Meitei, Deputy Food Safety Commissioner, during a press conference at the office of Directorate of Health Services, Government of Manipur at Lamphelpat today.
Brojendro stated that there should be no room for escape for those individuals and firms selling and producing such items which are harmful to the human body.
They should be punished under the Food Safety Act.
He explained that quality of the sugar safe for human consumption should flow freely and not stick when held with hand.
But the sugar in the market was found with whitish substances like crushed chalk powders, flour as well as small iron, rat droppings, etc.
The sugar in questioned had been brought from a shop in Imphal.
When the shopkeeper was asked about it, he told that it was brought from a common grocery shop at Dharmasala in Thangal Bazaar.
Brojendro assured that he would take up the matter with the higher authorities for booking those big businessmen who are into such types of business under the Food Safety Act.
On the other hand, the packaged drinking water being produced without following basic guidelines of Food Safety Act were also found being sold in the market.
The packaged drinking water in question was labeled "YES" .
Brojendro informed that the said packaged drinking water is being produced and manufactured by MS Lairikyengbam Enterprises located just opposite to Yairipok Police Station.
The packaged deinking water was found sold without any ISI mark and BIS certification.
As such, the water cannot be certified fit for human consumption.
