Imphal, November 19 2013:
Amnesty International, India has urged the Government of India to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 and 1999 .
In a statement issued to the media, Amnesty International India, asserted that attempts to challenge AFSPA have been met with weak responses from the authorities and recalled that the reports of the Justice Verma Committee and Justice Hegde Commission supported calls made to the authorities by the United Nations and India bodies to address the abuses committed under AFSPA and end the effective impunity enjoyed by the security forces.
For decades, the Armed Forces Special Powers Act has led to serious human rights violation committed by soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir and parts of North East India and shielded those responsible.
The Act has been in force in some parts of the North East since 1958 and in Jammu and Kashmir since 1990, said Amnesty International, India and added that this Act has facilitated grave human rights violations, including extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, rape and torture and other ill treatment.
