'Beheading' the head of Mahatma's statue at Ukhrul; Four held, VDF man axed

Responding swiftly to the situation, Ukhrul police have arrested four suspects in connection with severing the head of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi located in Ukhrul town in the wee hours of April 15 .
Among the four suspects rounded up one is a Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel and he has been dismissed from service with immediate effect.
The symbolic statue of the Father of the Nation erected twenty years back in the heart of Ukhrul district headquarters, 87 kms east of Imphal, was found vandalized, with the head severed.
Speaking to media-persons today, SP of Ukhrul police K Kabib said that the police had promptly taken up a case in connection with the incident and in the follow up action four individuals were arrested while one accused is still absconding.

The four arrested individuals are identified as Ngayaimi Mashanao (20) s/o Suisa Mashanao, (Phungreitang) Lunghar village Chingai block, AS Ngampam (22) s/o Ramshing AS of (Phungreitang), Maileng village, Phungyar block, Ringmiyo Mawon (19) S/o Shimaso Mawon of (Phungreitang), Chingai village and Shimi Haorei (24) S/o (L) Kanrei Haorei, of (Phungreitang) Khamasom Wallely village all from Ukhrul district.
The four accused have been remanded to police custody for 11 days after they were produced before the Court today, he said.
Amongst the four accused AS Ngampam is said to be a VDF personnel (No.105216) and he has been dismissed from service.
The SP said that the motive behind the incident is yet to be established.
It is further informed that under the stringent directive of the SP Ukhrul a police team comprising SDPO, Phungyar SDPO, Ukhrul OC and Investigation Officer (IO) hunted down the four accused and finally arrest them at Imphal last night and brought them back to Ukhrul yesterday night itself the SP said.
