Imphal, February 23 2016:
Copies of the Supreme Court's directive which directed all school van service operators not to carry students beyond the prescribed capacity have been distributed, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who is also in charge of Home Department informed the House today.
Raising a call attention motion, MLA L Ibomcha recalled a road accident where around 25 school students travelling in a van were injured at Kwakeithel along Tiddim Road recently.
Being a meeting point for four roads, Kwakeithel junction is quite prone to road accidents.
Even though police personnel are deployed in the area, they seldom extend any help when accidents occur, he alleged.
Hodam Leirak junction is another point on Tiddim Road where accidents occur often, Ibomcha said while urging the Government to build a traffic island at the junction.
Responding to the call attention motion, Gaikhangam stated a case was registered in connection with the road accident which took place at Kwakeithel junction.
By dividing the whole day into four shifts, police personnel have been assisting in managing vehicular traffic at busy points.
He also assured to consult Transport Department and Planning Department in order to build traffic islands at Kwakeithel junction and Hodam Leirak junction along Tiddim Road.
