Don't know where Meghen is : State police to MHRC

Imphal, November 22 2019: Following the instruction of the Manipur Human Rights Commission, the IGP (Trg/HR/RTI) on behalf of the DGP today submitted before the rights body that the State Police Department has no information of the whereabouts of Chairman of the UNLF RK Sanayaima alias Meghen who was released from Guwahati Central Jail on November 9.Meghen was received by his son and lawyer, said the IGP in his submission.

The MHRC had earlier directed the Chief Secretary and the DGP of Manipur to reply on the whereabouts of RK Meghen who was reportedly taken away by Government agencies following his release from jail after serving ten years in prison.

The MHRC has also asked the DGP to take necessary action to trace the whereabouts of RK Meghen within one week from today and to submit a report on the matter on or before November 30. On the other hand, an RTI has been filed to the Central Public Information Officer, Ministry of Home Affairs, asking where RK Sanayaima is presently being kept.

Apart from asking if regular health check ups of Meghen is being carried out or not, the RTI sought to know the arrest memo/documents indicating the arrest and detention of the Chairman of the UNLF along with his son RK Chinglen and lawyer M Gunadhor.

The RTI also sought to know under what provisions Meghen has been kept under detention.

Meanwhile the CPI, Manipur unit has questioned why RK Meghen is not allowed to return home even after serving ten years in jail.

Speaking to newsmen today secretary of the CPI, Manipur State Council, L Sotinkumar questioned under what policy the Government of India is barring Meghen from returning home even after serving ten years in jail at Guwahati.

Meghen was released on November 9 after serving ten years in jail.

Maintaining that detaining him even after serving his prison term is nothing but gross human rights violation, Sotinkumar said that the dictatorial style of functioning of the Government can only lead to more unrest.

At the moment, the Government of India is engaged in a peace dialogue with the NSCN (IM) as well as with the SoO groups, but has been turning a blind eye to the groups of Manipur and this is not conducive for peace, said Sotinkumar.

Intimidation, killings and coercion can never bring any solution, said the CPI leader and added that draconian laws like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act can never bring peace.

The anti-CAB movement is also a movement to save the indigenous folks of Manipur and the North East, said Sotinkumar.

Detaining after serving a full prison term does not inspire confidence at all, he said and added that such a policy will only alienate the people further.

RK Meghen must be allowed to return home as soon as possible, he added.
