Imphal, March 19 2012:
A truck driver engaged in transporting FCI rice has been assaulted by personnel of Nungba police station for complaining against charging 'tax' higher than the normal rate.
The incident happened in front of Nungba police station at about 6 pm of March 17 .
According to the victim who has been identified as Heigrujam Jayenta (44) of Patsoi Part 1, he was returning from Jiribam to Imphal carrying FCI rice on the fateful day.
While making an entry at Nungba police station, the police personnel forcibly charged Rs 70 as against the normal rate of Rs 50 .
At this, Jayenta complained that the heightened entry fee was unreasonable.
But the police personnel shouted back at Jayenta for speaking too much and started raining blows.
Strongly condemning that unwarranted assault, president of the NH 53 Truck Owners' Association Kh Inaoba asserted that it was not the first time police extracted illegal tax and treated drivers in the most scornful manner.
He also sought immediate attention of the relevant authorities to check such incidents.
In case such incidents continue, the association may even stop transportation of goods, Inaoba cautioned.
