Imphal, August 01 2011:
Setting August 10 as the deadline for devolving power to them as notified in the Gazette of the State Government, elected members of Ward Development Committees have announced their joint decision of socially boycotting the Ministers and the MLAs and not to extend support to their candidatures in the upcoming State Assembly election if their demand is not considered.
The decision was taken during a meeting convened by All Manipur Nagar Panchayat and Municipal Council Elected Ward Development Committee Members' Welfare Association at Ningthoukhong Bazar today.
Presided by Association vice president M Uttamkumar, the meeting was attended by members of Ward Development Committees of Bishnupur Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayats.
The meeting resolved that if the Manipur Municipal Community Participation Act, 2010 is not implemented by August 10, the elected Ward Development Committee members would take recourse to agitation and submit representations in this regard to the President, Prime Minister and Ministry of Urban Development.
Talking to mediapersons after the meeting, Association vice president M Uttamkumar asserted that failure of devolving power to the elected members of Ward Development Committees has made a mockery of the election.
In such a situation, the aggrieved elected members may even consider surrendering of the certificates given to them by the ROs declaraing their success in the election.
