TSLD celebrates 1st anniversary

Dimapur, June 29 2013 : Tangkhul Shanao Long, Delhi (Tangkhul Women Union-Delhi) has celebrated its first anniversary at Constitution Club of India, Rafi Marg, New Delhi today.

This year the theme of the celebration is 'Nurturing Truth and Dignity: Walk With us', which was deliberated by Tangkhul intellectuals and activists based in Delhi.

The event featured Guru Rewben Mashangva, the most celebrated Naga Folk singer (also known as the King of Naga Folk Blues and recipient of National Award), and also showcasing of traditional attires by young Tangkhul designers.

The celebration was graced by the presence of veteran Tangkhul Shanao Long leaders and women who have made immense contributions to our society.

"On our first anniversary, we endeavor to celebrate this short journey of our TSLD by honouring our past tradition and cultural practices.

We want to remember our past culture and traditions, as we strive to claim our identity in this fast-paced world.

In Tangkhul society, women have contributed in varied aspects in maintaining cultural identity of the community.

Despite all the roles and responsibilities that women have took up in their homes and society, we have never given up the task of weaving shawls, the skills which have been passed down one generation to another from primordial period of our history, and integral to our cultural identity," the Tangkhul women body stated.

"Tangkhul women's movement has its root in fighting against oppressive forces and exploitation of women, who belong to every walk of life.

As times have changed, the forms of exploitation against women have also changed its forms and intent.

In this journey of one year, we have been able to take up major work against trafficking of women and children from home-state to other parts of India.

The rescue operation of young children from Northeast holed up and exploited at 'Grace Home' in Jaipur during the month of March (2013), which we had worked with various other organizations, has made us aware about the dangers being posed to women and children at present times.

As migration of youths from our home states to various parts of country is increasing in unprecedented rate, our women have become soft targets in every city.

We have tried our best to mitigate the problems being faced by students and working professionals," the TSLD stated.

"Despite all the limitations, we intent to take forward that task what we have taken up in the last one year.

As we came together to take stock of what has happened in one year, we invite all our compatriots and supporters to join us in celebration of our struggle for a world free of exploitation and gender discrimination," the TSLD.
