The Maharaj Kumari Binodini Devi Foundation will present 'From Page to Screen', a retrospective of films directed by Aribam Syam Sharma based on the scripts of MK Binodini, at the Centenary Hall of Manipur University from February 21 to 24 .
A press release issued by Manipur University stated that the memorial programme to be held to mark the 95th anniversary of the Manipuri writer will also anchor 'Dialogue with the Director', a series of master classes with Aribam Syam Sharma at the Department of Mass Communication of the university.
'From Page to Screen' will open on February 21 at 1 pm with 'Imagi Ningthem', winner of the Grand Prix at Nantes in 1981, the groundbreaking film that established the voice of Manipuri cinema.
The premiere will be attended by Governor and Chief Rector of Manipur University Dr Najma Heptulla as chief guest and Prof W Vishwanath of the university as president.
"Few writers match the literary range of Sana Ibemma.
From novel to short story, theatre to radio-plays and essays to lyrics.
But it was my singular good fortune to work with her on her screenplays and scripts for the screen," said aribam Syam Sharma.
The collaboration of the director and writer will be seen at the university in four features and two shorts.
"The master classes with Eigya Syam is the first time that the screenplays of our Imasi MK Binodini will be studied.
Our students are honoured to be able to have intimate discussions with the filmmaker who brought them to the screen," said Dr Natasha Elangbam, Assistant Professor of the Department of Mass Communication.
The release informed that MK Binodini Devi's essays will also feature in Himalayan Arc: Journeys East of Southeast (Harper Collins, 2018) edited by Namita Gokhale, noted author and founder and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival to be launched at the opening.
The anthology of writings from Afghanistan and Pakistan through India, Bhutan, Nepal and Myanmar, the Himalayan Arc focuses on a crucial, enthralling yet often underreported part of the Himalayan belt the 'East of South-east', it stated.
"Linking her literature to film and viewer to student expresses the mission on Imasi Foundation.
We are delighted to continue to interaction with Manipur University that MK Binodini had during her lifetime as a Regent of the university and as a writer whose works are taught to its students," said L Somi Roy, founder and managing trustee.
