Housewife dies in 'suspicious manner', frenzied locals block Airport road

A housewife was killed due to alleged short circuit from rice cooker.
The incident took place at Kamong Meisnam Leikai, Imphal West on November 13 late evening.
The deceased has been identified as Chongtham (N) Langpoklakpam (O) Ibemcha Devi (47) w/o Nabakanta of Kamong Meisnam Leikai.
According to the deceased's elder brother Thoiba, Nabakanta's younger brother came to their residence at around 9 pm informing that Ibemcha has been admitted to Raj Medicity, North AOC after she suffered bum injuries caused by short circuit developed in rice cooker.
Soon after hearing the news, Ibemcha's family members rushed to the hospital where they met with the attending doctors who claimed that Ibemcha had suffered major bum injuries and that the rate of survival was low.
Thoiba said that when he entered the ICU room where his sister was kept under observation, he found that Ibemcha had succumbed to the injuries.
He suspected that his sister was set on fire in an attempt to kill her.
He also said that his sister unable to bear the alleged harassment meted out to her had returned to the parental home at Changangei Mayai Leikai in November 2015 .
He demanded a swift investigation into the incident and punish the culprit (s) as per the law.
It is said that Nabakanta surrendered before Nambol police station on November 14 .
A Joint Action Committee in connection with the incident has been formed.
Meanwhile, demanding the concerned authority to award exemplary punishment to the culprit (s), locals of Changangei Mayai Leikai blocked Imphal Airport road this evening affecting traffic flow along the busy road.
A large number of locals marched to the Chief Minister's Bungalow later in the evening to urge the CM to book the culprit (s) at the earliest.
However, they were stopped by police personnel from doing so.
Later the enraged locals staged a sit-in-protest at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai community hall in protest against the 'suspicious' death.
From the protest site, a representative of the JAC along with the local MLA Ak Mirabai went to meet CM Biren.
The JAC submitted a memorandum with regard to the incident.
The JAC has earnestly appealed to all the concerned individuals/groups to accept the dead body being kept at RIMS morgue and perform the last rites as per the customs.
Addressing media persons at Kamong Panthoibi Shanglen today, Pradhan, Kamong Gram Panchayat, Thangjam Thoiba who is also a member of the JAC appealed to all the concerned individuals/groups to accept the dead body and extend cooperation to the ongoing investigation into the incident to get justice to the incident at the earliest.
