MU to host Zonal VCs meet

For the firsttime, Manipur University would host a two-day East Zone Vice-Chancellors ' Meet from tomorrow.
Speaking about the meet which would be held under the aegis of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) at Manipur University this evening, MU VC Prof Adya Prasad Pandey said that the two-day event would be attended by around 40 VCs and it would be opened by Governor Dr Najma Heptulla.
Vice Chancellors of different universities will speak on topics related to the theme 'Future universities: Challenges and Opportunities for Relevance and Excellence', and at the end of the meeting, some recommendations would be adopted.
The deliberation will help alleviate the standard of Indian universities.
As such, it is good fortune for MU to host such an event, Prof Adya Prasad said.
AIU president Prof PB Sharma said that a new India is in the making and everybody is aware about it.
Higher education would be the driving force behind making a new India where its citizens are prosperous, law-abiding and responsible.
As per the needs of the country, higher education must be re-vitalised at the State, regional and National levels, Prof Sharma said.
AIU secretary general Prof Furqan Kamar said that there are around 800 universities in the country and 700 of them are members of AIU which was established in 1925 .
Apart from the North East States, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and some parts of Uttar Pradesh are included in AIU's East Zone.
There are around 150 universities in the East Zone and 104 of them are members of AIU, Prof Furqan said.
The main tasks of AIU are building a network among universities and facilitate sharing of knowledge and ideas.
Prof Furqan added.
