Betel leaves seized, no case lodged

Senapati, April 20 2020:
Twelve baskets filled with betel leaves were impounded from a truck which was assigned to transport essential items at Senapati today and later consigned to flames but surprisingly no case has been registered with the police and two persons with the consignment were let off with a warning.
The seized betel leaves is worth at least Rs 17 lakh in the market.
According to police, a vehicle assigned to ferry essential food commodities was caught with 12 baskets of betel leaves packed among foodstuff.
The truck was reportedly heading towards Imphal when the consignment was caught by the police.
The consignment was reportedly caught from one Mithun Ram (30) S/o Rameshwar Ram of Burma Camp Colony, Dimapur, Nagaland and Basanta Ray (35) years, S/o Shiv Chandra Ray of Lhimothi Colony, Dimapur, Nagaland.
The consignment was caught for violating the orders laid down in connection with Nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of COVID-19 .
No case is registered at Senapati Police Station and the accused were later set free after issuing a warning.
Later, the consignment was set on fire by the Senapati police led by Inspector Tezii, OC, Senapati Police Station in the presence of Senapati Karong Town Committee and Senapati District Students' Association at a garbage dumping site.
On the other hand, The Indian Red Cross Society, Senapati branch volunteers and executive members distributed face masks, sanitizers and hand gloves to vegetable vendors at Senapati Mini Stadium ground.
