Kangpokpi, August 13 2016 :
Local people of Saikul and Makokching District Council Constituency repaired the Sai-kul- Makokching suspension bridge constructed over Iril River today.
The Saikul-Makokching suspension bridge is over 40 years old and is the most important road leading to Saikul hill town.
Earlier in January this year, the local MDC Thongjalun Mate along with eight village chiefs inspected the decaying bridge.
The village chiefs appealed to the State Government and the department concerned to repair the decaying bridge but the State Government failed to respond to the people's demand.
Consequently, local populace led by the local MDC Thongjalun Mate repaired the suspension bridge using local resources.
The local MDC while underlining the need to initiate immediate action for proper renovation and modernization of the suspension bridge on the part of the State Government and department concerned, pointed out that all the elements of the bridge including the pair of main suspension cables stretching over two towers and smaller vertical suspender cables attached to the main cables to support the deck below and the pillars of the two towers are severely damaged.
The villagers could only manage to repair the floor portion of the suspension bridge through the local resources but a permanent solution is urgently required, he stated.
Villagers of Maojang, Ng Phainom, H Jangnom, Moljol, Songphelkholen, Tusam and Makokching took part in the repairing works.
