Imphal, July 17:
The North East Youth Congress Coordination Committee has submitted a memorandum to the President of India, KR Narayanan seeking the immediate revocation of the territorial extension of the Centre-NSCN(IM) ceasefire beyond Nagaland.
The memorandum, signed jointly by the presidents of the Manipur Pradesh, Assam Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress, termed the extension of the ceasefire beyond Nagaland as a heinous attempt to jeopardize the peaceful coexistence and integrity of northeast India.
It said the North East Youth Congress Coordination Committee openly supported the peace initiative and dialogue between the government of India and the NSCN(IM), but maintained that the talks had been going on without any transparency and the abrupt and hasty agreement resulting in the extension of the ceasefire to unlimited areas has left strong doubts in the mind of the people of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur relating to the disintegration of the region, and fear that the people will have to live under the diktat of the NSCN(IM).
While recalling the tragic events that have occurred in Manipur since the announcement of the agreement, the memorandum said the government of India has not taken the confidence of the people nor the elected state government prior to signing the agreement of territorial expansion.
