Imphal, November 04 2013:
Although the status of Manipuri language has been elevated after inclusion in the 8th Schedule, it still needs to be a technically developed language, Manipur Language Directorate said Monday.
"As of now, there's no spelling dictionary in the computer for Manipuri and no device for translation," said N Mahabir, Joint Director, Language Directorate, Manipur while taking part in the opening function of a 5-day training programme on natural language processing (NLP) in relation to Manipuri language at the directorate complex, Lamphelpat.
Manipuri language has not yet been put in the internet for public use, he further said, but added that the training programme has been organised with an aim to find ways to complement all these deficiencies of the language.
Kh Raghumani, Director, Language Cell for Manipuri language speaking during the function assured that the cell will try to provide this training to the tribal and minority people of the state too.
This, he said, will be taken up as a major plan from the next Financial Year towards developing the language.
The training programme is being organised jointly by Manipuri Language Planning and Implementation and Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), MHRD, Government of India, Mysore.
