Imphal, December 28 2012:
Deputy CM Gaikhangam, who also holds the portfolio of Home, has instructed top officials of the State Police Department to exclude VDF personnel from the duties of maintaining law and order in the State.
Informing this to media persons on the sidelines of observance of 127th foundation day of Congress party at Congress Bhavan here today, Gaikhangam said that considering reports of harassment of general public and increasing number of killings and assaults by Village Defense Force (VDF) personnel, the top officials of the Manipur police have been instructed to relieve all the VDFs from detailing duties for maintenance of law and order in the State.
Since the VDFs are not properly trained and at the same time they are being provided very less monthly salaries, it would not be a wise decision to give excess duties to them.
If at all they have to be used in maintaining law and order, they should be led by a Police officer and not by a Havildar, Gaikhangam added.
He also appealed to all the concerned to stop calling bandhs and blockades in the state to press their demands, no matter how small or serious the issue could be.
