Doctor's Day celebrated in State

The National Doctor's Day 2014 was celebrated at the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Manipur State Branch hall at Lamphelpat here on Tuesday.
Blood donation was the main feature of the celebration organized by the Manipur chapter of IMA.
According to the organizers, 74 units of blood were collected from employees of Babina Diagnostic Centre, personnel of Manipur Police Training School, Pangei and many individuals who turned up to donate blood on the occasion.
The solemn function held at the IMA hall to mark the National Doctor's Day was attended by Dr.Y Mohen, Secretary of Indian Red Cross Society and Dr Th Dhabali, president of IMA Manipur Branch as chief guest and president respectively.

Dr L Ibetombi Devi, chairperson, Manipur State Commission for Women and retired Professor and Head of Department of Pediatrics, RIMS, and Dr K Deben, retired Professor and Head of Department of Orthopedics, RIMS & JNIMS were also present at the function as guests of honour.
On the occasion, Dr L Ibetombi and Dr K Deben were honoured with mementos and shawls by the organizers.
In his speech, Dr Mohen said that Doctor's Day is celebrated across India on July 1 every year to honour the legendary physician and second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy.
The first Doctor's Day was celebrated in 1991.National Doctor's Day is commonly celebrated in India on the birthday of Dr Roy, which falls on July 1, which is also the date of his death, as a day to recognize his contributions towards individual lives and communities, Dr Mohen said.
Dr Bidhan was born on July 1, 1882 at BM Das Road, Bankipore in Patna, Bihar and died at the age of 80 years on the same date in 1962.Dr Roy was honoured with the country's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961 .
It is interesting to know that Doctor's Day is observed on different dates by different countries.
In United States, it is observed on March 30, on December 3 in Cuba, on August 1 in Iran and on February 27 in Vietnam to show the importance of doctors and their services to the community and public at large.
