Imphal, August 23 2012:
A 3-day long National Seminar on "Human trafficking and Plight of Women and Children: The Shifting Paradigm in Recent Years" commenced at Naorem Birahari College, Khundrakpam today.
The seminar is being organized by the college.
Inaugurating the seminar as Chief Guest, Dr Rk Ranjan, Director of College Development Council, Manipur University, said that human trafficking, more particularly trafficking of women and children, is a matter of serious concern and the state government should not take it lightly.
He went on to say that trafficking of women and children has become the most profitable business next to drug trafficking today.
As such, the state government should not stay silent over daily occurrences of missing women and children in the state.
He pointed out that victims of human trafficking are mainly those individuals who are poor and illiterate.
Even though the state claims that its GDP is increasing, there is also no denying the fact the number of people living below poverty line is increasing at an alarming rate.
Dr Rk Yaiskul, who was also present on the occasion as Guest of Honour, said that the issue of human trafficking has become one of the most dangerous issues of all time.
There is the urgent need to tackle the problem by giving adequate awareness on the issue to the general public.
The function was presided over by Ng Akashini, Principal of Naorem Birahari College.
