Imphal, April 21 2012:
Under the theme of 'Women: Agents of Social Transformation', a four-day long Manipur Catholic Women Convention-2012 has commenced from today at the Catholic Mission Campus, Mantripukhri.
It is said to be the first such convention of Catholic Women in Manipur.
The inaugural function of the convention was graced by MLA of Tadubi A/C Francis Ngajokpa, Rev Dominic Lumon, DD Archbishop of Imphal and Dorothy Poumai, ex-President of Manipur Catholic Women Organisation as Chief Guest, President and Guest of Honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Francis Ngajokpa said that in Manipuri society where different ethnic tribes live together, the women community has always played important role in bringing about peace and tranquility in the state more than their male counterparts.
He observed that women who follow Catholicism cannot be considered as true followers if they take part in bandhs and blockades which cause suffering to the general population.
So, they should abstain themselves from such agitations and help in bringing peace among the various ethnic groups.
Others who spoke at the occasion also emphasized on the roles that women could play in bringing peace and brotherhood in the society.
They also pointed out that women play active part in the social, economic and cultural issues of the state.
MLA Francis Ngajokpa also announced a financial contribution of Rs 1 lakh to the organisers of the convention.
