Rs 1777 crores projects to bring water from Thoubal Dam to Imphal

Imphal, October 02 2012: In order to solve the problem of shortage of safe drinking water in Imphal city, the government is planning to take up three projects at a total cost of Rs 1777 crore to lay pipeline from Thoubal Dam to Imphal.

At present, Imphal city is facing acute shortage of safe drinking water due to inadequate water sources.

According to official sources, Imphal city gets 50 MLD during lean period and 80 MLD during Monsoon season.

With an approximate population of 7.62 lakh, Imphal city needs 101.90 MLD at present and the requirement would reach 197.50 MLD in 2036 at the rate of current population growth.

Almost all the water treatment plants in Imphal city were built in 1978-79.Civil structures, mechanical and electrical installments of the plants have become outdated and these resulted in the decrease in both quality and quantity of the output.

After taking stock of the present conditions of the water treatment plants in Imphal city, the government has also approved renovation of 10 such plants.

In addition to this, the present water pipeline network which brings drinking water to Imphal city have worn out and broken at many parts.

So, the government has also discussed replacement of the pipelines with new and bigger pipes.

Meanwhile, starting from current fiscal year, the government is aiming to complete lying of water pipeline from Thoubal Dam to Imphal city by 2016-17 .

Out of the three projects, the first one is to establish a water pipeline from Thoubal Dam to Chingkheiching near Sanjembam village.

The project will be taken up at a total cost of Rs 531.58 crore.

The second project is to construct a Water Treatment Plant with a capacity of 45 MLD at Chingkheiching and to provide safe drinking water upto the Zonal Reservoir at a total cost Rs 168.58 crore.

While the third project is to renovate the 10 water treatment plant in Imphal city and the total cost of the project is said to be around Rs 844.83 crore.

Sources maintained that Thoubal Multipurpose Dam will provide irrigation facilities to 33,449 hectares of agricultural tracts, 45 MLD of safe drinking water and power generation of 7.5 MW.

The 115th meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Water Resources had approved the revised cost of the project at Rs 1,38,785 crore on June 24 this year.

The state government is discussing preparation of a detailed project report for the said project to seek central fund from the Ministry of Water Resources.
