Tamenglong civilian killed in factional clash

Tension is running high in Tamenglong district following the death of a civilian in an encounter that took place between a combined force of suspected ZUF, NSCN-K on one side and NSCN (IM) cadres on the other at Tamenglong district headquarters.
According to police source, a gunfight took place between the militant groups around 1.45 pm today.
A civilian identified as Jaikalung (42) s/o (L) Ngamsong of Bamgaijang village was killed in a crossfire while he was trying to herd the children playing at Model Village School ground to safety when the firing began.
The deceased received multiple bullet injuries.
He was said to be a carpenter.
The day's business at Tamenglong headquarters came to a halt as people ran helter-skelter following the encounter.
Meanwhile, a public meeting convened later by Zeliangrong bodies have strongly denounced the incident.
The dead body was handed over to family after conducting post mortem examination at Tamenglong District Hospital today.
Tension still simmers in the area, the source said.
The police and Assam Rifles personnel conducted an operation in the area to clear the area from the presence of militants, the source said.
