As elsewhere across India, the 143rd birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, better known as Mahatma Gandhi was observed in Manipur too with the Home Department organising a state function at GM Hall here today.
The main feature of the function was offering of floral tributes to the statue of MK Gandhi.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister O Ibobi stated that the country is observing National Cleanliness Day on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary in recognition of the late freedom fighter's penchant for cleanliness.
He hailed MK Gandhi as one great leader who championed for the cause of the downtrodden and the poor.
He not only battled for freedom but also struggled throughout his life to bring about peace and fraternity among different communities.
He fought valiantly against British rulers for freedom of India using only non-violent means.

He was a great leader of not only India but the entire world who worked tirelessly to remove all artificial barriers among mankind, Ibobi stated.
He also called upon all the people to keep the surrounding clean as it is one of the most effective means to keep oneself away from diseases.
Good health is necessary not only for the physique but also for the mind.
For peaceful co-existence among different communities, each and every citizen should be mentally sound and healthy.
It was the foremost wish of MK Gandhi to establish peace and cordiality between different communities.
Hailing MK Gandhi as a messenger of peace, Ibobi called upon all to remember Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence and peace so that all can live together in harmony, keeping aside all sorts of differences.
Only when people swear collectively to follow the principles of Gandhi, observing National Cleanliness Day would be meaningful, Ibobi asserted.
In his presidential speech, Health and Family Welfare Minister Phungzathang Tonsing stated that October 2 is being observed as National Cleanliness Day every year since 2007 .
Claiming that MK Gandhi is a respected figure all over the world, Phungzathang called upon all the citizens to cling to the ideas of Gandhi so that there is peace and cordiality in the society.
The birth anniversary of MK Gandhi was also observed at Congress Bhavan under the aegis of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) .
In addition to Chief Minister and his Council of Ministers and MLAs, MPCC office bearers, leaders of frontal organisations and Congress cells were present at the function.
