DESAM takes pot shots at RIMS Director

Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has strongly condemned the Director of RIMS on his failure to clarify the admission process of 25 more students related to increase in MBBS seats for Economically Weak Section (EWS) in RIMS for this year academic session despite requesting him for a formal clarification on August 16 .
A statement issued by DESAM alleged that instead of trying to resolve the issue, the Director influenced various other students and civil organisations in the State to withdraw the allegations made by DESAM.
It continued that the Director is yet to answer some important questions as to why the name of the selected candidates under EWS were not notified in any format after the counselling and as well as the reason behind the delay in the admission of the three students who were admitted under mysterious circumstances 8 days after the start of the foundation course on August 1 .
It mentioned that DESAM members visited RIMS campus to meet the staff and students of the institute and the members saw that various works related to celebration of graduation days for different courses on different days have also been an important development in RIMS.
RIMS is running 11 academic courses.
For the first time, the institute is celebrating two graduation days in September; one for the Dental college on September 7 with the Director General of Health Services and another for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students with the Health Minister as chief guest on September 14, the foundation day of the institute.
RIMS is not a university to organise a convocation like function in the name of graduation day, it alleged.
No one should take personal credit for the development of RIMS, said the student body adding the graduation day is an excuse to invite VVIPs at a heavy cost to an institute thriving on grants only.
Preparation has already been started with repairing the fencing and painting the outside walls of the building and fencing.
Many other repairing works are going on in full speed.
For the first time, a post foundation extravaganza is also planned, DESAM explained adding that this month is going to be the costliest month in the history of RIMS.
Such huge financial wastage comes at a time when students of the institute are running from pillar to post due to acute shortage of accommodation, classrooms, basic amenities specially water and when most of the Departments are looking forward for basic minimum equipment to run the undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
This is the only medical institute in the country where a disabled student can't access the administrative block, the library, classrooms, halls, sports facilities due to architectural barriers against the standing instructions from the Medical Council of India, DESAM alleged.
It continued that the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare should not be a party to such costly non-productive exercises in RIMS and it needs to give standing instruction to the present RIMS administration to focus on development rather than on festivity.
Further, DESAM warned the Director of RIMS to make appropriate clarification on the admission issues of EWS students in RIMS by September 5, failing which higher authorities will be approached to investigate his wrongdoings.
