Imphal, April 17 2013:
With no hope of acquiring Audiometer Machine which is one of the most important tools for imparting education to deaf and mute students by the State Government, teachers in the only Government Deaf and Mute School at Takyelpat have no option but to continue teaching the students using sign language.
According to sources, the Government Deaf and Mute School at Takyelpat, which is run under the Social Welfare Department, is in a sorry state today with all existing infrastructure in their worst possible condition.
Sources pointed out that an audiometer for the Government Deaf and Mute School is a must.
It is with the help of this machine that the level of deafness of a student is measured, and accordingly provides the hearing aid to the student.
The students are then taught in the classroom using the hearing aids.
So, in the absence of an audiometer, it is becoming a tough job to educate hearing impaired students because for them sound plays an important role for the brain to grasp knowledge.
Sources further explained that for installation of an audiometer, the room should be sound proof so that accurate results could be obtained from the machine.
However, as of now, there is no process for the installation of audiometer nor for construction of such a sound proof room in the lone Government Deaf and Mute School of the State.
