Imphal, February 17 2019:
L Mangi, secretary of Uyumpok Mamang Leikai Development Committee, has cautioned against construction of a PMGS Y road for Saikul Block, Senapati district, at Pukhao Shantipur, under Imphal East district, and has instead urged the authority concerned to shift the road construction to Sawombung Block, Imphal East.
Speaking to media persons while on an inspection trip to the area where the road construction work is being taken up by clearing the reserve forest areas of Pukhao and Uyumpok villages, Mangi said that Pukhao Shantipur road falls under Khundrakpam Kendra of Imphal East.
Early last year, construction of a PMGSY road began on the already existing road by clearing the hills, he said, adding that when investigated, it was found that the work order mentioned that the road was being constructed as a part of the Makokchung (Akaijang) to Khongbal Tangkhul, under Saikul Block, Senapati district.
Mangi alleged that many signboards describing the place as Senapati were also erected along the work sites but later they all vanished again.
He then explained that as per a Durbar order of 1932, the King donated the hill to Pukhao and Uyumpok and as such, a large number of the locals submitted necessary memo to the ML A of the Kendra and the Chief Conservator of Forest to refrain from building the road in the area.
Warning against continuation of the work for Senapati district at Pukhao Shantipur, Mangi demanded the road to be constructed at Sawombung instead.
He also demanded against any impact on the area in the demarcation of Senapati and Kangpokpi districts.
