258 Primary Schools to be upgraded
Difference of 20 schools noted in Cabinet memo

IN A move to bring about a total revolution in the education system of Manipur, the State Cabinet today approved upgradation of 258 primary schools into Upper Primary Schools.
The decision to upgrade 258 Primary Schools to the level of Upper Primary Schools was taken after discussing an earlier recommendation of the State Cabinet taken in this regard on September 13 last.
According to official sources, the Primary Schools to be upgraded include 56 in Imphal East, 53 in Imphal West, 59 in Thoubal, 27 in Bishnupur, 12 in Ukhrul, 22 in Senapati, 30 in Churachandpur and 7 in Chandel district.
Interestingly, a difference of 20 schools has been detected while totaling the figure given in the Cabinet memorandum which was tabled at the Cabinet meeting today.
It was on the basis of the Cabinet Memorandum signed by J Suresh Babu, Principal Secretary, Education (S) that the Cabinet has given its approval to upgradation of 258 Primary Schools to Upper Primary level.
As per the figure given in the Cabinet Memorandum, the total number of primary schools to be upgraded should be 278 .
Sources further disclosed that in accordance to an earlier proposal, the number of Primary Schools to be upgraded was only 2 in Bishnupur district, 57 in Churachandpur district, 10 in Imphal East district, 27 in Tamenglong district, 43 in Senapati district and 19 in Ukhrul district.
Imphal West, Thoubal and Chandel drew a complete black in the said proposal.
However, after a serious deliberation, the decision to upgrade 258 Primary Schools to Upper Primary Schools was arrived at.
Though no specific names of the schools to be upgraded were brought up for discussion during the Cabinet meeting today, it was decided that at least 2 schools in the constituencies of Opposition MLAs and 5 schools in the Constituencies of ruling MLAs would be upgraded.
