Imphal, September 03 2012:
All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has appealed to the people of the state for their support and co-operation to the general strike being called by North East Students Organisation (NESO) in all the North East States excluding Assam on September 6 .
The strike is being called against alleged discriminatory attitude meted out to the NE people by mainland India and the silence of the Indian Government over the increasing number of illegal migrants in NE.
Talking to media persons in this connection at AMSU head quarters here today, Thokchom Suresh, President, AMSU informed that the Executive Council meeting of NESO which was held on August 24 resolved to call a general strike in all the NE states excluding Assam from 5am to 5 pm of September 6 .
Suresh explained that the general strike will not cover the state of Assam because on September 6 all the government delegates of the North Eastern States, members of MP forum of the 7 North East States and the delegates from the states of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh will be meeting in Guwahati and a public rally will be carried out in the city.
After the public rally, the delegates from Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh will be informing the public about the measures taken up by the respective state governments to safeguard the North Easterners.
AMSU has also approached the Chief Minister of Manipur to send delegates from the state to take part in the proposed public rally, Suresh conveyed.
Stating that essential services will be relaxed during the general strike, he also appealed to all the CSOs of the state to lend their support to the strike.
While applauding the steps taken up by the State Home Department for checking the influx of migrants, Th Suresh, however, asserted that it would have been more appreciable if the State Government had come up with a specific policy to curb entry of illegal migrants in the state instead of waiting for directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
General Secretary of AMSU, Depanjit was also present during the
press conference.
