The 18-hour general strike called by CorCom, a conglomeration of seven UG groups, against the merger of Manipur with India by effecting a 'controversial' agreement with the then powerless King of Manipur, Budhachandra at Shillong on October 15, 1949, was total in the state.
Normal life was affected in the state to the maximum with all educational institutions, banks and several private offices remaining closed.
Markets, shops and other business establishment also down their shutters for the day and Imphal city and other major towns wore a deserted look.
Even though government offices were opened, very few employees turned up as no passenger buses and other vehicles did not ply on the road.
