Imphal, March 14 2012:
The Yaiskul Apunba Nupi Lup has insisted on the use of ballot papers in elections and has decided to launch agitation against the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in future elections in the state.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, Th Jogbala, Convenor of Yaiskul Apunba Nupi Lup, contended that the results of the EVMs used in the recently held elections to the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly, was full of discrepancies and errors and thus EVMs have become unreliable.
So, it is right time for each and every individual to raise objection against use of EVMs in elections, she exhorted.
Instead of EVMs, it will be more appropriate to shift to using good old ballot papers in future elections, she observed.
She further pointed out that use of EVMs have been totally banned in the United States where the EVM was invented.
Likewise in California, Ireland, German, Netherland and other developed countries, use of EVMs have stopped and the people there stick to the ballot papers.
Now people have realized that only ballot papers can give the true results.
In such a situation, it is quite surprising that the government of India discarded ballot papers and insisted on using EVMs.
Jogbala also informed that a memorandum would be submitted to the authority concerned in this regard very soon.
The people should realize the importance of ballot papers and the drawbacks of EVMs, she added.
