Imphal, March 14 2012:
A 2-day National Seminar on Sustainable Cropping of Medicinal Plants for Biodiversity Conservation jointly organised by All Manipur Medicinal Plants Development Association and the Department of Botany, GP Women's College, commenced from today at the college's auditorium.
The inaugural function of the National seminar being sponsored by University Grant Commission (UGC), North Eastern Regional Office, Guwahati was graced by Prof W Nabakumar, Dean of School of Human and Environmental Science, Manipur University as Chief Guest, Y Chandrashakhi, Principal of GP Women's College as President and JM Laishram, Convenor of College Research Committee, CAU as Guest of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion as a resource person, Prof H Akendra said that this small state of Manipur is rich in medicinal plants which are found abundantly in both the hills and the plains.
These medicinal plants which include 'peruk', 'terapaibi', 'yenshin' and 'oak hidak' are being used since the days of our forefathers for treating certain diseases.
But unfortunately the present generation seldom understands the importance of these medicinal plants and relies on medicines prescribed by doctors.
Akendra also expressed regret over the alleged negligence of the state government over taking up necessary steps to promote medicinal plants on a large scale and appealed to the authority concerned for paying interest in this regard by establishing certain factories to help the people and generate more revenue of the state.
