Livestock vital for economic development: Lakher

Livestock plays a vital role in the overall economic development of the state, Commissioner of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry, Government of Manipur L Lakher has exclaimed.
Speaking as Chief Guest of the inaugural function of a day-long State Level Workshop on National Animal Disease Reporting System (NADRS) held at the conference hall of the Disease Investigation Laboratory, Sanjenthong here today, Lakher said that National Animal Disease Reporting System is a new scheme taken up by the Central government.
It was instituted in 2010, as a part of the 11th Five Year Plan, with cent percent assistance from the Central government.
He pointed out that during the year 2007-08; livestock contributed 5.21 percent of the GDP growth of the country.
The main obstacle in promoting livestock in the country, however, is the diseases associated with them.
These zoonotic diseases not only reduce the productivity of livestock, but also discourage investments from both domestic and foreign investors.
On the importance of the workshop, Lakher explained that the National Animal Disease Reporting System would help in reporting outbreak of any zoonotic disease and generate public awareness.
Through this computerised system, every Blocks, districts and state headquarters would be enable to share information regarding outbreak of animal diseases directly with the Central Disease Reporting and Monitoring Unit at Delhi.
Dr Th Jeevan, Director of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Government of Manipur, who was also present on the occasion, said that the National Animal Disease Reporting System is a good scheme taken up by the Union government for the people.
People who are engaged in livestock business should be able to take enough benefit from the said scheme.
