Imphal, November 01 2012:
A two-day long 'Fusion of Modern and Tribal Music Festival for Inter Ethnic Harmony' being organized by Rhythms of Manipur kicked off from today at the banquet hall of Hotel Imphal.
The inaugural function of the festival, which is being organized with the financial support of Ministry of Culture, Government of India under the Cultural Functions Grant Scheme was graced by S Vedeshwar Sharma, Secretary, Manipur State Kala Akademi and Padmashree RK Achoubisana, former Pradhan Guru, JNMDA as Chief Guest and President respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, S Vedeshwar noted that dance and music through which Manipur is known to the outside world, seem to have no place in the syllabus of Board of Secondary Education Manipur till today.
This is very unfortunate.
There is urgent need to include dance and music in the syllabus of Manipur Board at the earliest.
He observed that with inclusion of dance and music in the syllabus of Manipur Board, students would be able to up higher studies in the field.
Since this is not the case at present, public are facing difficulties in trying to learn dance and music.
Furthermore, he pointed out that there is some parity in all the rhythms of different songs.
Though the tunes produced by Meetei Pung and the western drums seem to be different, yet there is much similarity among the two, rhythmically.
As such, we can build a unification of the music of the hills and the plains.
A 45-minute long fusion music played by 17 musicians was performed on the occasion.
