Jiribam, December 07 2019:
All Jiribam Road Transport Union (AJRTDU) inspected the Barak bridge on Imphal-Jiribam road today.
Members of the union visited the bridge after getting the report of 10/12 wheelers vehicles being stopped from crossing the bridge due to 'problems' since the last three days.
AJRTDU president M Tombabu Singh, joint secretary K Anil and information secretary N Arun took part in the inspection.
Mohanta Kumar Kalita, Senior Engineer BIPL said that the condition of the bridge has deteriorated over time as it had been tolerating weight beyond its capacity.
Six personnel are strictly monitoring the condition of the bridge, he said adding that maintaining/adhering to the prescribed load/tonnage is necessary for the longevity of the bridge.
The bridge requires constant monitoring as heavy vehicles could fail the bridge.
If there is a problem with the bridge after a heavy vehicle (10/12 wheeler) crosses it, a gap of about 4-5 hours is maintained before letting another heavy vehicle cross, he added.
Observing the condition of the bridge, AJRTDU president M Tombabu urged the authorities concerned to maintain and repair the bridge if needed to ease transport.
