The Directorate of Field Publicity (DFP), Imphal and Chandel Unit, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India and Manipur University organised the National Handloom Day at the seminar hall of Manipur Institute of Management Studies (MIMS), MU, today .
Speaking at the event, Vice Chancellor of MU, Professor Adya Prasad Pandey said that weavers are not given as much importance as they deserve nor are they able to market their products and expressed hope that the Central Government's emphasis on small scale industries and Make in India ventures will play an important role in giving the handloom industries the impetus it deserves .
Station Director of All India Radio, Imphal, Dilip Mayengbam, stressed on the need for collaboration between the weavers and the marketing managements to get the desired results .
Sunibala Devi, Project Manager, District Handloom Textiles, Imphal West and Professor Ch Ibohal Singh, Director of MIMS were also present as the presidium members at the event .
Ch Ibohal Singh said that there are 8 lakh unemployed youths in Manipur and handloom industry can be a promising entrepreneurial venture for the educated youth to provide employment for themselves through innovative distribution and marketing ideas .
National Awardee in Handloom, Urikhinbam Bala Devi spoke on her journey of making Safee Lanfee and how it won the only sole National Award in Handloom for Manipur so far.
