Imphal, May 24 2020:
In connection with the seizure of a consignment of smuggled items from a 'police vehicle' near Bongjang village along Imphal-Moreh road on May 23, the Kuki Women Union and Human Rights (KWOHR), Moreh; Kuki Student's Organisation (KSO), Moreh, Moreh Youth Club (MYC) and the Hill Tribal Council (HTC) have made certain demands to the State Government and department (s) concerned.
In a press release issued today, KWOHR said that they are astonished and saddened to learn that at the time when the general public is in fear of COVID-19 pandemic, some personnel of Moreh Police Station were caught by Assam Rifles with 'banned Myanmar products' .
Claiming that police commandos who were supposed to keep a strict vigil at the border areas have become the transporters and businessmen, KWOHR said that the said commandos could have been contaminated with COVID-19 .
The Indo-Myanmar border has been sealed by the Government to save the public from possible exposure to the deadly virus, the women union questioned if the border was sealed only for the public but not for the police.
KWOHR then demanded the State Government to immediately terminate all the 'careless officers and personnel involved" .
KSO also said that Moreh police commandos have become a threat to Moreh residents.
Alleging that they (Moreh police commandos) keep the lives of the innocent public at risk by practising border trade during COVID -19 pandemic lockdown, KSO Moreh Block urged all concerned not to hush up and conceal the incident and disclosed the details of involved commandos, apprehended consignments and vehicles at the earliest.
Meanwhile, in a joint statement, HTC and MYC alleged that police commandos are learnt to have involved in transporting illegal items and demanded the State Government to remove the commandos involved at the earliest.
