Lockdown hits hard on 18 yrs old artiste

On account of the Nationwide lockdown which was imposed since late March 2020, working-class people across the State, particularly artistes are finding it hard to sustain their livelihood.
One such artiste is RK Alex, who sketch on banyan leaf in his free time and do a menial job to look after himself and his family.
Born to Late RK Gandhi of Phumlou Mamang Leikai, Imphal West, RK Alex (18) is currently living with his elder brother (RK Navy) and grandmother RK Sakhi.
He has given his Class XII examination recently.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, RK Alex stated that he started drawing on banyan leaf since 2019 and that he had sold nearly 200 pieces till date.
Price of each piece varies from Rs 1, 500 to 2,000, depending on the size, he said and added that some of his works were lost while storing.
"On the advice of one of my teacher, I started framing my pieces to preserve it for a longer period, Framing of one leaf cost from Rs 180 to 300," Alex said.
Lamenting that he had sent some of his works to some foreign countries such as Indonesia, Japan and Dubai, RK Alex said that child climate activist Licipriya had also placed orders for his work.
Saying that his brother went to Bengaluru to undergo Medical Representative's training and he sent money for his (brother) accommodation, RK Alex said that he is finding it difficult shouldering show many responsibilities with the meagre amount he received from his work.
"Before I used to sell my art pieces at Bazar, but I cannot do that anymore as there is a lockdown," he said and added that only a few people come to his home now to buy his pieces.
He also said that his brother (RK Navy), who went to Bengaluru with the hope of getting a job to escape from poverty is stuck there.
"Fortunately, his name is included among fellow Manipuris who will be evacuated," he added.
RK Alex also thanked all who had helped him at this time of crisis.
