Thoubal, May 06 2020:
N Munal Meitei, Range Officer Kakching released one Indian black turtle (Melanochelys trijuga) rescued by Kh Gopen Singh of Thongam Khunou in its natural habitat today.
After the turtle was released, N Munal Meitei said that the medium size turtle is included in Schedule-IV of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and near-threatened species as per IUCN list.
N Munal Meitei lauded Kh Gopen Singh for handing over the turtle to Forest Department, Manipur.
Instead of handing over it, if he had killed the turtle or sell it for some money, then he may be punished with a fine amounting upto Rs 25,000 or imprisonment for a term of 3 years or with both, he added.
