Mahatma Gandhi commemorated at different areas of the State

To mark the celebration of Gandhi Jayanti, mass social services were carried at different areas of the State apart from organising various competitions and activities.
Associates of Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM) along with the staff of Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) took out a rally on the streets of Imphal City today to spread the message of cleanliness.
IMC Mayor L Lokeshwar flagged off the rally from GM Hall premise, which was jointly organized by Area Level Federations (ALFs) and Self Help Groups (SHGs) under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM) and IMC.
It passed through BT Road and concluded at Kangla Western Gate after making a U-turn from Samumakhong.
The Mayor also took pledge with the participants to keep the environment neat and clean, before flagging off the rally.
Speaking to media persons on the sideline of the event, Lokeshwar informed that the rally was organized as part of the Swachhta Hi Seva (National Cleanliness Day) in commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary.
Reminding that green and blue dustbins are installed at various locations of Imphal City, he appealed to the public to put liquid waste materials inside the green dustbins and solid wastes inside the blue dustbins.
In view of the Nationwide Swachh Bharat (Clean India) drive held in connection with the birth anniversary of the father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, officers and staff of United Bank of India, Imphal branch carried out a cleanliness drive at Thangal Kiethel today.
The UBI team cleaned the dirt and removed garbages from MG Avenue till Khuyathohg Traffic point.
It can be recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on October 2, 2014 to mark the celebration of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Manipur Sarvodaya Mandal also observed the day at Public Library Imphal by organising Mahatma Gandhi Photo Exhibition along with a book releasing event.
The event was attended by former MLA Rajbapu Singh, IMC ward no 8 Corporator P Devala, former MLA Dr Kh Loken and Mala Imphal president T Kangjam Chaoba as dignitaries.
Floral tributes were paid to the photo of Mahatma Gandhi as part of the celebration.
Apart from holding the exhibition, a book written by Social Reformers Sane Guruji which was translated to Manipuri by TG Ngangomba and titled as "Bapugi Nungai-Nungairaba waree" was also released.
Speaking on the occasion, chief guest of the event, Rajbapu stated that celebrating day makes the people remember the devotion, contribution and works of Mahatma Gandhi.
Meanwhile, Lion Clubs of Imphal also observed the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi by organising a social service camp at its Lion Service Centre, Sangaiprou today.
Members of the club cleaned the Service Centre premises and planted about 20 tree saplings.
On the occasion, president of the club, Lion RK Laksana urged the people to inculcate the habit of keeping the surrounding clean and hygienic.
On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, a cleanliness drive was also organised at Sangaiprou village and the surrounding villages of F/32 Battalion CRPF, CAF&PD, Sangaiprou.
Personnel of F/32 Battalion CRPF and villagers took part in the drive enthusiastically.
A press release issued by Officer Commanding, F/32 Bn CRPF stated that the chief and secretary of the village lauded the initiative of the CRPF.
The joint team cut down the grass, clean out the garbage and plastic waste materials etc.
On the other hand, a large group of scientists, staff and students of Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), a National Institute of Department of Biotechnology, Gol cleaned up Kangla and Ima Keithel to observe the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Stating that such activities are important for the cleanliness and health of the rivers, into which most of Imphal's wastes are being dumped, Prof Dinabandhu Sahoo, Director IBSD said that the programme was also organised to educated the youth to set an example for others.
Several women vendors joined the social service at the market and also helped in un-clogging several drains.
