Churchandpur has 2nd highest female literacy rate

Tamenglong district, one of the most backward districts in the country, still has the lowest literate people, reveals the provisional census 2011 report in respect of Manipur released here on Friday.
State chief coordinator of census 2011, Dinokumar today released the provisional report at a function held at Hotel Classic in which director of census operation Manipur Y Thamkishore and Imphal West DC, K Radhakumar also attended.
As per the report, Manipur has a total of 1,891,196 literate persons representing 79.85% of the total population.
Out of this total literate persons, 1,026,733 (86.49%) are males and 864,463 (73.17%) are females, an increase of 9.35 % .
Tamenglong district with a population of 1,40,143 has only literate persons 85,939.The figures for the district is 47,928 (76.74%) male literate persons while the number of female literates is 38,011 (63.80%) .
With 395,731 (80.71%) literate persons out of 514,683 heads, Imphal West district is still at the top having the highest number of literate persons.
The district has 174,044 (92.93%) literate males while the total number of female literates is 187,887 (80.71%) .
Chandel district has the second lowest literate persons with 16,496 (63.26%) literate persons out of the total heads of 144,028.The district has 51,396 (70.85%) male literate persons and 38,959 (63.26%) female literate persons.
Churachandpur district, apart from having highest literacy rate among the five hill districts, has a higher literacy rate than the three districts in the valley, Thoubal, Imphal east and Bishnupur.
Senapati district has 232,149 literate persons representing 75% of its population of 354,972 .
The district has 1,28,806 (80.85%) male literate persons while the number of literate females is 1,03,343 representing 68.80% of the total female population.
Out of the total 1,83,115 heads in Ukhrul district, 1,31,118 persons are literate persons representing 81.87% of its total population.
The male literate persons of the district is 70,618 (81.87) and that of females are 60,500 (86.05%), the provisional census report, 2011 indicates.
Imphal east district has the second highest literacy rate among the four valley districts with 342,535 of the total 4,52,661 heads being literate persons which represents 82.81%.The total male literate persons of the district are 1,74,044 (89.86%) and the number of female literates is 1,50,491 (75.92%) .
Thoubal district, having a population of 4,20,517, has 2,71,035 literate persons and it represent 76.66% of the total heads.
2,71,035 male (85.90%) are literate and the female literate persons are 1,20,450 (67.57%) .
Out of the total 2,40,363 persons in Bishnupur district, 1,60,740 (76.35%) can read and write.
Out of them, 89,486 (85.52%) are males and 71,254 (67.57%) are females.
Among the nine district of the state, Chandel district has the lowest female literacy rate with 63.26 and Tamenglong district follows with 63.76%.Imphal west tops the list of female literacy rate with 80.71 % which is closely followed by Churachandpur with 80.13% .
The report pointed out that the total population of Manipur is 27,21,756 comprising of 13,69,764 males and 13,51,992 females.
The total population saw an increase of 333,122 people over the 2001 Census with a decadal growth rate of 18.65.The sex ratio-number of females per 1000 males in the state is 987 .
The state has recorded a population density of 122 persons per sq km.
Out of the total population of the state, 19.37% are concentrated in Imphal west district while 17.21% are in Imphal east district.
Tamenglong is home to only 4.86 of the total population of the state while with 5.16% Chandel district is in the second from the bottom in the distribution of population.
The district wise population distribution is Imphal West-514,683 (19.37%), Imphal East-452,661 (17.21%), Thoubal -420,517 (15.87%), Senapati-354,972 (13.04%), Churachandpur-271,274 (9.97%), Bishnupur- 240,363 (8.83%), Ukhrul-183,115 (6.73%), Chandel-144,028 (5.29%) and Tamenglong-140,143 (5.15%) .
While releasing the report, state chief coordinator Dinokumar said that the report is rather raw and not subject to intensive checks and cross checks.
He further said, the numbers given are somewhat tentative and the final figures may be a bit different.
"Some caution is therefore needed while interpreting the results.
The intelligent data user will definitely keep these limitations at the back of his mind but still use the data provided here to pick up earlier demographic trends," he added.
