Imphal, April 24 2012:
Noted environmentalist Dr Kh Shamungou has stated that Kharsa (hog deer) found in Keibul Lamjao National Park is equally endangered like Sangai.
He was speaking as chief guest at the 36th foundation day of Keibul Lamjao National Park held at Keibul.
Incidentally, Dr Kh Shamungou is a member of the deer specialist group of the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) .
Like Sangai, Kharsas found in Keibul Lamjao are facing a critical situation.
It's high time to take up conservation measures for the deer species.
Saying that Sangai is closely associated with the history and culture of Manipur, Dr Shamungou proposed to declare Sangai as State heritage animal.
He further proposed to celebrate the foundation of Keibul Lamjao National Park as the Sangai Day.
The foundation function was presided by Kumbi College Principal K Jugeshwar.
LDA scientist Dr Shyamjai was also present as guest of honour.
Officials of Keibul Lamjao National Park said that people can now see Sangais inside the park unlike in the past when people could not see Sangais even after waiting for a whole day.
The park authority later presented simple gifts to Forest Guards.
All those people who took part in counting birds were also presented a certificate each.
