Concern voiced on Kidney Day

Clinical Prevention for Treatment cum World Kidney Day was observed at the boardroom of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences today.
Speaking at the occasion as a resource person, Dr Rajesh Waikhom said chronic kidney diseases have become a major health concern in the State.
So, one must keep blood pressure in control to prevent possible kidney diseases, he added.
Informing that chronic kidney diseases are the major causes of kidney failures, Dr Rajesh added that advanced kidney patients have to undergo dialysis regularly.
Saying that such patients are necessary to be put under dialysis two times a week, he said that such patients have to spend Rs 40,000
every week.
High blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, stone case in the urinary tract and infection in kidney are the major reasons for chronic kidney diseases, he added.
Dr Rajesh Waikhom further said that everybody must put blood sugar and blood pressure under control and undergo kidney function test for every three months.
State Social Welfare Board Chairman RK Nayansana Devi graced the programme jointly organised by Alzheimer's Related Disorders Society of India, Manipur Chapter, Women Economic and Social Empowerment Forum and Khurai Thoudam Leikai Women's Welfare Association.
Professor of JNIMS Medicine Department, Y Ibopishak and Assistant Professor of JNIMS Psychiatric Department, K Shantibala were the president and guest of honour of the programme respectively.
Prof Y Ibopishak said that one must control high consumption of salt, maintain proper height-weight ratio, undergo intense exercise atleast half hour a day, drink plenty of water, consume less protein, control diabetese, control excessive bleeding in child delivery and avoid pain killer medicines and drug abuse in order to fend off kidney diseases.
Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Society of India Member H Sanamatum while speaking in the programme said that JNIMS does not have Nephrology Department although prevalence of kidney diseases is high in the State.
Change of lifestyle and food habits are also the reasons why cases of kidney diseases are increasing in the State.
A pamphlet on kidney diseases was also released in the programme organised under the theme, 'Kidney for Life, Save Your Heart' .
