Imphal, April 03 2016:
A team of Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) led by its convenor Khomdram Ratan and members of JCILPS Women's Wing and Students' Wing conducted a verification drive at a construction site at Melaground, Lamboi-khongnangkhong and detained 17 non-local workers for not possessing identification cards and related documents.
All the 17 workers have been handed over to Lamphel police.
Speaking to media persons, Khomdram Ratan said that the team had earlier today visited NIT Complex at Langol.
As it is Sunday, the team could not meet the NIT officials.
Subsequently, the team went to Melaground at Lamboikhongnangmakhong.
Upon reaching, the team found non-local workers working at a construction site under sub-contractor S Prem.
During the drive, the team found some workers without the identification cards and other related documents.
Therefore, they have been handed over to Lamphel police for defying the Labour Law.
Khomdram Ratan added that numerous non-local workers were handed over to police yesterday for not possessing required documents.
State Government's negligence to curb such law violating practice right in the heart of the Imphal city is unfortunate, he added.
He further said that the State Government could have supported the initiative of JCILPS if it has the will power to save the indigenous people of the State.
Duties of Labour Department and Police Department are being carried out by JCILPS.
JCILPS has no other option but to resort to intense agitation in case the State Government continues to take the matter lightly, Khomdram Ratan maintained and added that the officials of Labour Department should also participate in JCILPS' drive for effective outcome.
When enquired, sub-contractor S Prem said that the construction work has been implemented under MANICO.
He said that he would ensure that proper identification process is conducted while hiring any non-local worker in future.
Agent Ruhimuddin (45) of West Bengal said he had contacted the workers who are staying at rented houses in Uripok and Mantripukhri for painting work.
