Cuban Ambassador delivers lecture at MU

In Cuba 65% of the jobs in the technical sector are held by women, MA Ramirez Ramos, Ambassador of Cuba in India, said today during a talk on "Achievement of Cuban Revolution".
The programme was organized by the Dean of Students' Welfare, Manipur University, Chanchipur at the Senate Hall of the university.
Talking about the present socio-economic condition and development pace in Cuba, the Ambassador said his country has been facing US economic blockade for the last 50 years.
Ramirez said that in the Cuban Parliament 43% of the total seats are represented by women.
Cuban women play a major role in Cuban society.
The human resource development of his country is very high, higher than India but hi-tech and biotechnology products are imported from other countries including India, the ambassador said.
Regarding the healthcare delivery system, he said the population-doctor ratio is on the average compared to other developing countries and doctors discharge their duties with dedication.
They remain stationed in their respective places of posting for most of the time.
Medical services have advanced at a fast rate, he asserted adding that in the field of education, the Cuban government gives emphasis in improving the literacy rate in the country.
Cubans have a genuine love for their country and the sense of nationalism among the people is very high, he said adding that was why Cuba is developing despite the 50 years of economic blockade imposed by the US.
He went on to say that economic sanctions worth 700 billion dollars imposed by the United States half a century ago had arrested the economy of the country, but the nationalist fervour of the people of Cuba has enable the country to steer through the crisis and successfully brought back the nation on the path to economic growth and prosperity.
"While the US keeps talking about human rights violations, they themselves are guilty of disrespecting human rights," he said.
Though Cuba won less than the expected number of Olympic medals in the last games, its per capita medal-population ratio is the highest in the world, the ambassador said.
In Cuba the people have the right to recall and reevaluate their representatives every six months because there is a constitutional rule governing the obligation of the representatives of the people to show their achievements after every six months.
The ambassador said that he would initiate an exchange programme between Manipur University and Havana University .
The function was presided by Dean of Students' Welfare, Prof Th Ratankumar and participated by a number of professors and students.
Later, a cultural show was presented by All Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association.
Tomorrow, the visiting VVIP will have an interactive programme at Imphal College and later watch a Shumang Leela.
